A song I wrote with Viktor Krauss, ‘Lie Awake,’ is the subject of a ‘Songwriter Series’ feature on alisonkrauss.com.

While I worked on the melody, Alison was trying to figure out who could write the words.  After our initial conversation about the song, she came across this lyricist and amazing singer, Angel Snow.  Upon meeting Angel at a friend’s house, Alison called me and said, “I think I’ve found your lyricist!”

Angel Snow’s story is the stuff a singer’s dreams are made of — meet a big star, she records your songs and then invites you to open for her at major venues. It happened to Snow when she met Alison Krauss in Nashville, but the story is much deeper. Snow is a powerful wordsmith with a clear, beautiful voice; her positive personality and familiar themes touch listeners.

Opening act Angel Snow also cast a spell over the crowd. They adopted her early, and not just because of her angelic good looks. Her songs, which were played to perfection by her all-acoustic band, have an air of magic to them — at times sounding like Gillian Welch mixed with Sarah Mclachlan; other times,  like an Appalachian Fiona Apple or Jeff Buckley. Krauss discovered Snow’s music via her CD demo, and ended up including her song “Lie Awake” on Paper Airplane. Watching Snow on this night, on the famed Ryman stage, it felt like a star was born.

 

AOL: Your brother, Viktor, wrote ‘Lie Awake’ for the album. That’s a gorgeous song.

ALISON: He wrote that with a beautiful songwriter named Angel Snow. I was driving from Indianapolis back to Nashville, and this song came on the radio. It was a pop song and I loved the way the melody of the verse and the chorus stayed where it was, it didn’t go someplace else. The thing that made the chorus the chorus was the harmony. I thought, “Oh, man, I wish we had something like that.” I called my brother and asked him if he knew that song. He said, “Oh, yeah, I know that song. I sing it to my wife.” I said, “Can you try and write something like that.” He said, “Yeah, I think I can.” Vik isn’t a lyricist, so he wrote a track for it, and Angel and he got together and she wrote the lyrics. They’re such beautiful, truthful lyrics.
